Abstract
This study uses nationally representative household data from the Taiwan Communication Survey (TCS) in 2022 to examine how exposure to political information on social media impacts news trust (attitudinal dimension) and engagement (behavioral dimension) through exposure to uncivil messages and perceived incivility. Results show that encountering political information onsocial media makes individuals more prone to encountering uncivil messages. Exposure to political information on social media does not directly influence news trust, but when the information exposure triggers exposure to incivility and perceived incivility, news trust decreases. In addition, exposure to political information on social media can directly increase news engagement, but when the information exposure serially prompts exposure to uncivil messages and perceived incivility, it leads to a decrease in news engagement. The study found that perceived incivility serves as a crucial mediating factor in influencing the behavioral outcome (i.e., news engagement). However, when it comes to trusting the news, seeing uncivil messages can directly weaken news trust without needing perceived incivility to play a role in that effect.
