    Department of Applied Data Science
Established in 2020 within the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Applied Data Science (ADS) provides a rigorous curriculum centered on three core domains: business analytics, digital humanities, and data visualization. Students also acquire essential skills in statistics and data analytics.
As the first and only technology-specific department at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, the Department has proactively developed a range of digital and technological programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels to address the challenges posed by rapid digital transformation and market demands. The Bachelor of Science with Honours in Applied Data Science (BSc-ADS), launched in September 2022, focuses primarily on big data analytics within business, engineering, and healthcare contexts. This programme equips graduates with interdisciplinary knowledge that integrates business applications and liberal arts. Notably, the BSc-ADS programme has been subsidized by the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) with a JUPAS Code JSSY02, commencing in the academic year 2025/26. This endorsement underscores the quality of the curriculum and the pressing needs of the market.
Furthermore, the Department will introduce two new programmes in September 2025, they are the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Digital Solutions for Entertainment and Game Applications (BSc-DSEGA) and the Master of Science in Game Development and Management (MSc-GDM). These additions enhance the Department’s capacity to produce not only skilled data scientists but also professionals equipped for careers in digital entertainment and game development. This evolution reflects the Department's commitment to adapting to the digital landscape by nurturing graduates with technological expertise across various levels, fostering interdisciplinary mindsets capable of addressing complex digital challenges.
In 2020, with a generous donation from the iFREE GROUP and a government matching fund totaling HK$40 million, HKSYU established the iFREE Innovation and Research Centre. This center includes several research laboratories, such as the Big Data Lab, the Virtual Reality Lab, the Social Robotics and Digital Living Lab, and the Innovation Incubation Hub. Additionally, with financial support from the government’s Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme for Self-financing Post-secondary Education (ESGS), a new Game Development Laboratory will be inaugurated in July 2025. These state-of-the-art facilities are designed to promote multidisciplinary teaching and research, expand the University’s research agenda, and cultivate a vibrant research community capable of engaging in both liberal arts and technology-oriented research.
The Department remains dedicated to recruiting high-caliber faculty and students, focusing our resources on cultivating the next generation of leaders in applied data science. We eagerly anticipate welcoming you to the HKSYU community.

    Department of Counselling & Psychology
Counselling takes place when a counsellor sees a client in a private and confidential setting to explore a difficulty the client is having, distress they may be experiencing or perhaps their dissatisfaction with life, or loss of a sense of direction and purpose. Counselling focuses on personal growth. It helps clients develop and become connected to their internal resources and emphasizes the evolution of both interpersonal as well as internal harmony.

In this sense, Counselling is provided to a wide spectrum of clients ranging from those who are apparently well-adapted to those who display evident symptoms of pathological adaptation.

Counselling is about people and therefore our counselling training is built upon and continuously fortified by knowledge in Psychology which is the study of the human mind. It can be said that in the honoured tradition of the scientist-practitioner, our programmes seek to weld the art of Counselling and the science of Psychology together to produce a body of knowledge so that students are equipped with a wide range of skills and techniques based on established theoretical frameworks. Thus equipped, graduates can then serve the counselling needs of the community much more effectively.

    Department of Social Work
Message from the Head of Department

The Department of Social Work was one of the first academic departments established by the Hong Kong Shue Yan University (HKSYU) when the University was founded in 1971. The Department has played a significant role in contributing to the development of the social work profession in Hong Kong ever since.
The Diploma in Social Work was first offered in 1971 by the University. Over the past 50 years, the Diploma in Social Work has evolved to the now much acclaimed Bachelor of Social Work (Hons) (BSW) programme. The BSW programme was launched in 2002, four years prior to HKSYU being granted University status in 2006 and has been accredited by the Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) since then. As of today, the University has trained over hundreds of graduates who have formed a strong pool of professional social workers contributing to the local community.
Our BSW programme is the only one in Hong Kong which offers three fieldwork placements for our students. The three fieldwork placements allow our students to further consolidate their knowledge and provide them with additional opportunities and exposure in different service areas. The importance of generating new knowledge is also an important feature of the BSW programme. Each student has to design and conduct an honors research study on a social work related issue. The honors project has proven to be a great asset for our students in their future career development.
In 2021, the BSW programme was accredited by the SWRB with a validity period of 8 academic years from 2021/22 to 2028/29, which is the longest period of validity period permitted by SWRB. This is a recognition of the high standard of the programme and its teaching as well as the dedication of the University and the Department in providing high quality social work education to the younger generation.
Our hope for our graduates is that they will become competent and compassionate leaders in their respective fields, drawing the unique strength of each individual, adopting an open, reflective and critical mindset and partnering with different professionals, trades, stakeholders and sectors of our community to make a better society for all.
Together with my colleagues, our Department will continue to do our utmost to ensure that our curriculum is updated, our teaching is relevant and our effort to generate new knowledge is vigorous.

    Department of Sociology
The Department of Sociology at Hong Kong Shue Yan University has faculty members who specialize in a variety of fields in sociology and anthropology, including social stratification and mobility, culture and heritage, popular culture, social movement, migration, gender, political sociology, social problems and crime, economic sociology, and medical and health care. Its curriculum goes beyond offering general training in undergraduate sociology and the teaching of quantitative and qualitative research methods. It distinguishes itself from other sociology departments in Hong Kong in three ways:

    (1) Concentrations
While the curriculum covers general sociology courses, two “Concentrations” were implemented in 2021-22, namely, “Entrepreneurship and Community” and “Culture, Heritage, and Innovation”. They allow students to take courses in specific areas within a general sociology curriculum.

    (2) Addition of New Programme
Since 2022-23, the department has begun to develop a new programme entitled “Arts, Culture, and Technology” (ACT), which provides specialized training to students interested in the application of technology in the fields of arts and cultural heritage. The first batch of ACT students was admitted in 2023-24. Therefore, the Department of Sociology now has two independent undergraduate programmes as follows:

BSocSc (Hons.) in Sociology Programme, and
BSocSc (Hons.) in Arts, Culture, and Technology Programme

    (3) Credit-bearing Internships
For over fifteen years, the department has offered credit-bearing internship courses for students to gain first-hand experiences in social, business, and cultural enterprises and apply sociological knowledge in the workplace. This practical side of the curriculum, aiming to enhance the employability of students, has been further strengthened when the two Concentrations and the new ACT Programme were launched.

In sum, the approach we are using can be summarized by the “A-R-P” Triangle as shown below:
A = Academic training (Sociological analysis and critical thinking)
R = Research skills (Ability to conduct research and analyze data)
P = Practical experience (Gaining practical experience through internships)

The three components, A, R and P, are interrelated, and together they equip students with sociological perspectives and insights, social research skills, and opportunities of practical experience that would enhance their employability in the job market.
