A knowledge-based system shell called SYSTEM Z-1, which is based on an original approach using fuzzy reasoning and linguistic techniques, is presented. The prototype system developed consists of a parser, three knowledge-base-management modules, an independent knowledge base for storing fuzzy rules and facts, an inference engine based on fuzzy logic, and a linguistic approximation routine. SYSTEM Z-1 can handle inexact reasoning and has a natural language interface with a limited vocabulary. The overall architecture and the individual modules of the system are described.en_US
