Abstract
Psychological and developmental theories and previous research findings supported an association between parenting styles, sense of self, and attribution styles. Accordingly, a model between them had proposed in the present study. The present study aimed to examine the proposed model with empirical research methods. Path analysis was used to examine associations between parenting styles (PAQ-S, Alkharusi, Aldhafri, Kazem, Alzubiadi, & Al-Bahrani, 2011), self-construals (Singelis, 1994), self-efficacy (GSES-12, Booscher & Smit, 1998), and attribution styles (SASQ, Peterson, Semmel, von Baeyer, Abramson, Metasky, & Seligman, 1982). Two hundred university students in Hong Kong (male: 56; female: 144) participated in this study. Path analysis results indicated significant predictions between variables of parenting styles, self-construals, self-efficacy, and attribution styles (internality).
Results supported the path models of parenting styles, sense of self, and attribution styles (internality). Both clinical implication and research implication are discussed at the end of this paper. The present study suggests the importance of parenting in terms of individuals’ psychological wellbeing.
