Abstract
This thesis is conducted to examine the perspectives of the married and cohabited couples
regarding the factors that affect an individual’s view point of a romantic relationship of the
population in Hong Kong. 17 interviewees were invited for an interview between October
2012 and March 2013. 8 couples and 1 individual were recruited by purposive sampling to
participate in this study. 3 pairs were cohabited, 3 pairs were married, and 2 pairs were
married, they had engaged in cohabitation and then got married at the time they were
interviewed. The narrative analysis was used as the method of analysis. The participants
reported their stories based on their development and process of the relationship. The
interview results showed that both cohabiting and married participants indicated that
commitment was essential in a relationship.
