Abstract
In this presentation, the links between the sense of meaning, purpose in life and spirituality for promoting the positive development of young people will be explored. The results of a pilot study for investigating the effects of a 3-session brief intervention program on promoting the well-being and positive development of teenaged students will be reported. There were 51 students from three Grade 10 classes of a secondary school participated in this pilot study. Among them, 30 students from two classes were assigned to participate in the brief intervention program on well-being and positive development through personal narratives and storytelling activities (the personal narratives condition), whereas 21 students of the other class participated in an alternative treatment program basing on living a good life with ideas in positive psychology (the positive life education condition). Participants’ self-reported levels of meaning in life, purpose in life, life satisfaction, resilience, and spiritual well-being were measured at baseline and post-intervention assessment. The results revealed that there were no significant differences in the participants’ reported levels of meaning in life, purpose in life, and the well-being outcomes from baseline to posttest across the two conditions. However, the data of individual program condition revealed that there was a a significant increase in the levels of purpose in life and resilience for participants in the personal narratives and storytelling condition. Participants with low gratitude in the pretest and in the personal narratives condition have revealed an increase in spiritual well-being. The implications of the findings will be discussed.
