Abstract
Single-sex education was preserved Hong Kong, leaving good school fame and academic
achievements of graduates. Previous researches had shown that students might have hindered
gender stereotype after studying in the gender segregation environment. However, the result
varied within cultures. This research studied the gender-endorsement activities and the shaping
from the subjective experience in secondary girls’ schools in Hong Kong context. 10 participants
coming from 9 girls’ schools were recruited using convenience sampling. They were interviewed
about their experience in girls’ school and perception (or values) about girls’ school, perception
towards genders, and their endorsement in gender activities. Transcript was analyzed using
grounded theory approach with NVivo. From the result, temperament and characteristics of girls’
schools’ graduates were described, with their choices in career development and relationship
style. These characteristics were shaped by school policy in image, education style and gender
segregation. Mesofactors such as school fame and socioeconomic status also affected the shaping to certain extent. Strengths and drawbacks of girls’ schools’ culture was discussed with
recommendation suggested.
