The challenges of achieving educational equity and addressing diverse needs in gifted education programs within the influence of Confucianism

Abstract
Gifted education programs in China have led to an academic debate on their educational
value, their alignment with the equity principles of Chinese education system, and how they meet
diverse needs of gifted students. Studies have highlighted public misunderstanding of the concept of
giftedness and how giftedness fits within traditional Chinese Confucianism. The aim of the study
was to correct any misconceptions by reviewing Chinese notions of giftedness with reference to the
influence of Confucianism ideology. The paper categorizes gifted education programs in China into
two main models: academic-oriented gifted program (including Key Schools, Key Classes,
Opportunity Classes and Mount Everest Plan) and holistic gifted program (i.e., Wings Project). In
particular, attention is given to the “Wings Project” as an example of an effective program that is in
line with values of educational equity and meet diverse needs of gifted students. The conclusion
reached from the review is that schools should focus on creating an inclusive environment with a
diversified curriculum, multiple identification methods, and an equal opportunity for all students to
achieve excellence.
中國的天才教育項目引發了關於其教育價值與中國教育體系公平原則的契合度以及如何更好地滿足天才學生多樣化需求的學術討論.研究指出,公眾對天才的概念存在誤解,尤其是在傳統儒家思想體系中的影響下.本研究的目標是透過審視儒家思想對中國天才觀念的影響,以糾正這些誤解.本文將中國的天才教育項目分為兩大模式:學術導向型天才教育項目(包括重點學校重點班和珠峰計劃)與全人發展型天才教育項目(即展翅計劃).特別是,展翅計劃被視為一個有效的典範,它不僅符合教育公平的價值觀,也滿足了天才學生的多樣化需求。研究得出的結論是,學校應致力於營造包容性的教育環境,提供多元化課程採用多元識別方法,並為所有學生提供平等機會,以實現卓越發展.
