Abstract
Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of p sycholinguistic experiments demonstrating
that people can often understand the figurative interpretations of metaphors without necessarily having to first analyze and reject the literalmeanings. A s such, the present paper gives a critical review of these directmodels of metaphor comprehension in the light of their respective claims and supporting psycholinguistic evidence.
