Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the enhancement effect of voluntary work on older retirees’ quality of life. We interviewed 190 Chinese retirees aged from 55 to 91 year (mean = 70.68) in the summer of 2002 and 2003, with 63% of them working as volunteers before and during the period of study. The results of 3 ANOVA, controlling pretest score of life satisfaction, distress, and perceived health as covariate separately, supported the enhancement effect hypothesis. Compared to non-volunteers, those continued volunteering reported significantly greater life satisfaction, less distress, and better perceived physical health at the 2nd interview.
