Abstract
This chapter examines the critical intersection of play therapy and special educational needs (SEN) support within Hong Kong’s educational context. As the SEN community has expanded in Hong Kong in recent decades, it has become increasingly essential to understand the emotional and psychological challenges faced by these students. Play therapy has emerged as a valuable intervention. Enabling children to communicate and express themselves through play can enhance their emotional regulation and social skills. Despite its potential, the implementation of play therapy in schools faces numerous challenges, including inadequate resources, insufficient staff training, and varying perceptions among educators and parents. This chapter highlights insights from interviews with key stakeholders, including play therapists, school teachers and administrators, to identify barriers and potential strategies for effective integration. By advocating for systemic changes in educational practices, the chapter emphasises the necessity of prioritising mental health and emotional well-being for students with SEN, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive future.
