Navigating transnational eldercare during health crisis: A thematic analysis of married couples in Hong Kong

Abstract
This qualitative study explored how expatriates living in Hong Kong experienced transnational caregiving for their older parents during a parental health crisis and focused on individual and couple experiences. Twenty participants (10 married couples) participated in interviews, and the data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis to identify patterns and themes. Three themes emerged: “Navigating two countries and families,” which described tensions in managing distant family demands; “Containment – coping ‘here’,” which highlighted strategies such as withdrawal and compartmentalization; and “Weathering the storm together,” which captured how caregiving impacted couple functioning. Findings indicated that transnational caregiving involved unique distance-related stressors, including negotiation of care from afar and challenges in maintaining family cohesion. The study highlighted individual and dyadic coping processes and implications for culturally attuned psychological support.
