Abstract
Both quantitative (online questionnaire, N=100) and qualitative (twelve interviews) data were collected to gain a comprehensive understanding of the positive aspects of being a lesbian, gay and bisexual individual. Qualitative analyses reveal eight positive themes that can be derived from LGB identity include authentic self, increased self-awareness, more connections with others, acceptance of diversity and empathy, being free from traditional gender role and relationship structures, egalitarian relationship (for lesbian participants only), loving someone regardless of gender (for bisexual participants only), and seeing coming out as the most important way to achieve positive identity (for gay participants only). Out of the eight themes, five were most often mentioned and a model was used to describe the interdependence and interrelations among these five themes, and how such five themes play crucial roles in reinforcing one’s positive identity. Overall, this study suggests that Hong Kong mental health professionals should take note of the importance of affirmative psychotherapy training and strength-based approach in supporting LGB individuals.
