Abstract
The purposes of this study are to evaluate the relationship between self-talk, psychological
resilience and psychological distress. There were 111 participants (43 male and 68 female).
The results showed that Hong Kong citizens shared similar patterns of self-talk strategies to
those used by westerners; and the negative self-talk showed the significant positive
relationships with depression, anxiety and stress, and it showed a negative correlation with
psychological resilience, while positive self-talk was found to have a positive relationship
with psychological resilience capacity. As a result, it seems that it can be concluded that in
order to increase psychological resilience and prevent psychological distress, an individual
should minimize the use of negative self-talk and increase positive self-talk in their daily life.
