Abstract
Supervision is a crucial element for the development of the counseling professionals and
especially fundamental for the growth of counseling trainees. The research aimed to
investigate the Hong Kong counseling trainee’s needs in supervision so as to enhance the
efficiency of the supervision for them. Nine participants who graduated from different
counseling related programs were interviewed individually to express their opinions on this
topic. The data collected was analyzed by thematic analysis. Five themes represented the
counseling trainees’ needs in supervision were developed. These themes are: enhancing
competence in the counseling field, feeling supportive, personal and professional
development, good quality of supervisors, and better supervision related arrangement. These findings suggested that counseling trainee’s needs in supervision were diversified and were not only limited to case intervention.
