Abstract
Counselling, as a developing profession in Hong Kong in recent times, has been facing
different challenges in building up a professional identity. With the enhancement of
professional development programs, the standards of counsellors improved significantly from this quality training in Hong Kong. Yet, the public understanding of this profession remains at a limited level (Yu, Fu, Zhao & Davey, 2010). This qualitative study investigated the perspectives of counsellors within the profession their potential needs to enhance the
development. A semi-structured interview was conducted with ten counsellors. The findings
from the participants confirmed the limited public understanding. They also indicated the
urge to build a distinct professional identity in educating the public; a more active role that
needed to be taken by the counsellors in order to promote the registration of counsellors
which was crucial to the professional development; and a call for the Counselling Association to take up a more significant role to structuralize the local training, monitor the ongoing training of the counsellors and promote indigenous study of counselling.
