Abstract
This chapter examines the implementation of diversity and inclusion principles within a school organisation, emphasising the key roles of school leaders during ongoing transitions in educational policy. It summarises the book into three thematic sections. First, it examines current understandings of diversity and inclusion from legal, social, and organisational perspectives, highlighting the challenges in translating policies into actionable strategies. Second, it focuses on the dynamics of school leaders, detailing their multifaceted responsibilities in fostering collaboration, professional development, and effective instructional strategies for students with special educational needs (SEN). This includes team-building and the establishment of community partnerships to enhance support systems. Thirdly, it addresses the specific challenges faced by students with SEN, such as specific learning difficulties, ASD and mental illness, advocating for tailored intervention programs and culturally responsive practices.
To advance the promotion of diversity and inclusion, this chapter highlights five key elements of leadership and management: empowering inclusive leadership, collaborative leadership for SEN support, professional development for inclusive leadership, fostering holistic growth through SEN support, and culturally responsive leadership in SEN support. Also, the chapter suggests an integrative approach to SEN support that considers contextual and cultural influences while promoting diversity and inclusion. It urges future research into these factors that shape leadership and management. The insights presented aim to deepen our understanding of the complexities of leadership in integrated education and to guide effective leadership strategies within the educational landscape of Hong Kong and beyond.
