Abstract
The Ballad of Mulan, an ancient poem which traces back to China’s Southern and Northern Dynasties (420–589), has been translated into different languages across the world due to its popularity. Among these many translations, one of the most wellknown versions is the one adapted by The Walt Disney Company into the form of a movie released in 1998. In the academia, compared to the considerable amount of discussion given to the Disney version of the story on the subjects such as transculturation or cultural remediation, relatively little attention has been given regarding its translation and transformation as a picture book. This paper will discuss the French translation and adaptation of the Chinese poem into the format of a French picture book and will argue that the translation serves as mediation of ideology on heroism between the East and the West by moulding the protagonist Mulan as a contemporary liberated heroine.
