Abstract
Numerous studies focus on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Asperger syndrome (AS) in
children, little is known about the conditions in adulthood. The majority of adults with AS
remain undiagnosed and many of these individuals get married, bringing unexplained and
significant challenges to the couple’s relationship. As the neuro-developmental profile of AS
allows for little changes in adaptive behavior, thus the marital success will largely depends on the neurotypical (NT) partner’s ability and willingness to adapt his/her behaviors to maintain the relationship. NT partner is considered responsible for the relational distress and adverse effects on the physical and psychosocial well-being. The lived experience of this population has been remarkably neglected by researchers. This study adopted narrative approach to explore the lived experience of individuals with partner with AS, based on semi-structured individual interviews with eight females in Hong Kong. Eight timelines revealed five salient themes among NT partner’s lived experience: psychological and social isolation, commitment and responsibility in intimacy relationship, traditional expectations to a husband, protection of other family members, and unconditional acceptance to AS partner. The importance of the awareness of the presence of NT-AS relationship among public and helping professions was discussed. Long-term intervention programme is needed.
