Abstract
The essences of the lived experiences of 6 parents of children with autism were
identified through qualitative methods. Results suggests that parents of children with autism experienced (a) psychological process of internalizing the children’s diagnosed disorders; (b) thoughts of hoping for miracle towards the children’s disorders; (c) emotional distress throughout the process of being parents of children with autism; (d) behaviors of social withdrawal; (e) demonstrated stereotypical concepts towards counselling services; (f) the needs of fathers of parents with autism were generally neglected; and (g) parents’ perception of initial intervention provided immediately after diagnosis as ineffective. These findings provided exhaustive understandings of these parents’ subjective experiences regarding to what they experienced as parents of children with autism, how the disorder impacted their aspects of life, and their perceptions of self, children and supports received. In addition, parents’ psychological process of internalization was highlighted as the central tenet of the current research that had yet to be tapped on in the past. These findings not only provide more in-depth understandings in the local parents’ experiences, and also serve as foundations for building future specific services.
