Abstract
The purpose of current study was to investigate the perceived parenting styles and coping
strategies as source of individual difference in Hong Kong Chinese excessive gamblers'
gambling behaviors. Baumrind's parenting typology, and the coping model by Folkman and
Lazarus were the rationales of current study. A total 60 Chinese adult excessive gambler
subjects were included in this study. Results indicated (1) significant correlations between
permissive parenting and Confrontive coping, authoritarian parenting and Confrontive coping; (2) Escape-avoidance coping and permissive parenting were significant predictors of the numbers of maladaptive gambling behavior, while permissive parenting was predictor of the numbers of gambling activities attended; (3) The coping factors (i.e. Avoidant, Keep On Fighting, and Help Seeking) were extracted and reflected the cultural similarities and
differences; (4) Authoritarian parenting was found significant contribution in explaining the
severity of maladaptive gambling behavior, permissive parenting and avoidant coping factor were found significant contribution in explaining participation in gambling activity (i.e.
Jockey Club's Football betting, Financial speculation, and Mahjong House gambling). These
findings suggested that parenting and coping style play significant roles beyond maladaptive gambling behavior and participation of gambling. Implication and further investigation related to parenting, coping style, and cultural differences in gambling were discussed.
