Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is twofold. First, we seek to examine the extent to which the reform policies of the 1980s succeeded in stimulating the productive efficiency of China’s state-owned enterprises. Second, we investigate the nature of the employment policies pursued by such enterprises in order to show whether employment expansion remained a major objective for these enterprises.
