Abstract
There is a narrative strategy in Hu Shi's works called "self-construal". Although he insisted that western literature that represented by Tomas Henry Huxley and John Dewey has a far-reaching impact on him, his concept of study is inseparable from the trend of thought in the late Qing Dynasty. This article attempts to investigate Hu Shi's inheritance and reconstruction of Mohism in the late Qing Dynasty and New Text Confucianism, thus exploring the potential thread of thought regarding his study of Mohism, and the impact that the New Text Confucianism has on his skeptical spirit towards the ancient. The reason why Hu Shi seldom admitted the impact of tradition on him is that under the era atmosphere of worshiping everything foreign and new, he had to adopt western literature as his theoretical basis, otherwise it would be hard for him to establish a wildly-recognized academic system.
