Abstract
This chapter discusses two issues. Using the impact of the 26th December Indian Ocean tsunami in Thailand to provide the context, the first focuses on identifying the factors that influence resilience and posttraumatic growth in coastal Thai communities. The second addresses issues arising from researching these outcomes in cross-cultural contexts. This chapter explores the procedures that need to be put in place to assess the cross-cultural validity of using resilience and growth (collective efficacy, response efficacy and posttraumatic growth) measures developed in Western, individualistic cultures with members of collectivist communities. Having established the cross-cultural validity of the measures, the authors then proceeds to identify the predictors of each outcome. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the need to develop a better understanding of indigenous and culture-specific resilience.
