Abstract
Liu Xie,author of China’s greatest work of literary aesthetics,Wen Xin Diao Long ( 文心雕龙) or known as The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons,is in the affirmative to the belief of‘words being able to sufficiently convey the meaning’,but he is not an absolutist in this regard, reflecting his eclectic approach of‘striving to be in moderation’. First,Liu fully appreciates the restrictions of words in expressing what ones intends to express while recognizing the inability of the author to convey his authentic ideas to the utmost due to a number of unpredicted factors such as the caprice of the author’s state of mind, the diversity of writing styles, the nuances in representational objects, etc. Second, based on his own writing practice,Liu investigates into the causes for the problem of‘words failing to express the meaning sufficiently’,which, for example, include‘level of difficulty in reasoning’,‘changeability in author’s mental outline’,‘stress on formalism’,etc.
