Background and Purpose of the Study: In the rapidly evolving landscape of the AI age, the proficiency of higher vocational students’ digital competencies holds pivotal significance for their academic pursuits and future employability. This study delves into the realm of higher vocational education, aiming to investigate the digital competencies exhibited by students within the context of the AI age. RQ1. To what extent do higher vocational students possess proficient technological mastery in the AI age? RQ2. What are the demographic and exposure-related factors influencing higher vocational students’ digital competencies? RQ3. How do educators perceive the relevance of digital competencies for higher vocational students in the AI age? Research Design: Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study adopts a tailored self-assessment survey tool to comprehensively evaluate higher vocational students’ digital competencies in the AI age. The survey tool, designed specifically for this research, encompasses dimensions of technological mastery, encompassing abilities, competencies, and skills pertinent to leveraging digital technology, media, and tools. Findings: The statistical analysis of the survey data establishes correlations between students’ proficiency as digital citizens and their ability to navigate academic tasks effectively. Notably, a strong connection emerges between students’ adeptness in managing digital well-being, their information literacy skills, and their overall academic performance. Complementing the quantitative findings, qualitative insights are garnered through focus group discussions with educators. Contribution to Practice: In conclusion, this study presents a comprehensive exploration of higher vocational students’ digital competencies in the context of the AI age. By analyzing the dimensions of technological mastery, digital citizenship, and attitudes toward continuous learning, the research provides valuable insights into the capabilities required for success in an AI-driven world.
