Dr. GAO Chong, Department of Sociology, organised and chaired a conference panel at – “The 16th Annual conference of the Hong Kong Sociological Association”. The panel title is “Session 2C: Packaging Cultural-Religious Practices as Tourist Attractions in China: Reactions and Contestations I”.

The Department of Sociology hosted – “17th Annual Conference of the Hong Kong Sociological Association” at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. The theme of the conference – “Sociological Imagination in a Pluralist World”. Altogether 17 panels; 63 persons registered for paper presentation; finally 57 persons presented papers at the conference; 11 staff members of the Department of Sociology participated in the conference; 1 member of staff chaired a keynote speech; 4 members of staff acted as panel chairs; 6 members of staff presented papers. All 10 students of Hong Kong Shue Yan Univertisty Sociological Society attended the conference as student helpers.

Social Research Centre, Department of Sociology held a seminar. Topic: Contract and Collective Lives of Common People in Traditional China. Speaker: Professor Ip Po-Keung (University of Western Ontario), Distinguished Professor, Graduate Institute of Philosophy, National Central University, Taiwan (retired 2016), Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CUHK.

Co-organized by the Contemporary China Research Center and the Department of Sociology of Hong Kong Shue Yan University: Seminar – The Extended Family as a “White Lie”: Competing Family Ideals in Qing Taiwan Family Division Contracts. Speaker: Professor Timothy Y. Tsu, Kwansei Gakuin University.

Co-organized by the Contemporary China Research Center and the Department of Sociology of Hong Kong Shue Yan University – Seminar on “How Chinese are you?: Chinese American adoptive parents and their children from China” Speaker: Professor Andrea Louie (Department of Anthropology, Michigan State University, USA).

The Chinese Hayek Society & Department of Economics and Finance, Hong Kong Shue Yan University in conjunction with Department of Economics, Feng Chia University, Taiwan, Department of Economics, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, Department of Sociology, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, and Department of Business Administration, Hong Kong Shue Yan University organised – “The Sixth Annual Meeting of the Chinese Hayaek Society”.

The Department of Sociology has been designated as one of the Supporting Organisations for the “Social Enterprise Summit” to be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and Southorn Stadium.
