Abstract: In this information era, knowledge becomes the key ingredient to success. Many countries have adopted education as a high priority item on their national policy. Facing the same changes, the government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) aims to develop a life-long learning community. Continuing education plays a significant role in the framework of life-long learning. The usage of Internet in education changes our way to learn. This paper introduces the new alternative in training – E-learning. E-learning can simply be defined as online learning via the Internet. The paper starts with the definition of e-learning. It is followed by the discussion on the reasons of the growth of e-learning, definitely globalization and technology will not be ignored. To have a better understanding of this web-based education, its pros and cons is addressed. E-learning may not work best in every situation. The paper indicates factors to enhance the effectiveness of e-learning. A survey has taken place to gather information on the attitude of Hong Kong people towards e-learning. The survey indicates a low acceptance and popularity of e-learning in Hong Kong. E-learning is still in its infancy, government supports and training providers involvement is essential for its development.
