Researching asylum seekers and ethnic minority cancer patients in Hong Kong: Some methodological and ethical concerns

Abstract

This presentation is based on my experience of two latest research projects, i.e. the life experiences of asylum seekers and the ways in which ethnic minority cancer patients cope with their illness in Hong Kong. It will share my reflection raised before and after my fieldworks. Methodologically, it is almost impossible to conduct in-depth interviews without engaging in participant observation with the informants as this is the only way to build up rapport with them. Moreover, participant observation cannot be successfully implemented without gatekeepers who are primarily the leaders of grassroot NGOs. A very core ethical concern is that researchers must be aware of the power relation with the informants, especially when they are members of the disadvantaged group. This draws implications for the followings: first, avoid being manipulative and coercive before and during fieldwork. Second, think about whether the relationship will end after the fieldwork and if so, whether the researcher would be guilty of taking advantage of this group of population. Third, a follow-up relationship between two parties in terms of keeping in touch in the social media, engaging in the volunteering work in their community and policy advocacy should be essential.
