This relationship may be theoretically fraught, however, as researchers investigate how SLA processes and performance tasks can be adjusted to depend less on working memory. Meanwhile, WM assessment procedures have become increasingly sophisticated, but WM is sometimes measured rather simplistically in applied linguistics.
