Zhang and Jin’s (1996) proposed a suicidal ideation model showing that family cohesion negatively predicted it while religiosity, depression and pro-suicide attitudes positively predicted it. In order to develop a locally relevant model to Hong Kong, this study tested a model with parental bonding and religiosity as the antecedents, and depression and pro- suicide attitudes mediating the formation of suicidal ideation. Data was collected from an online survey with 283 Hong Kong Chinese adults. The results showed that religiosity directly and positively predicting suicidal ideation. In contrast, parental care negatively predicts pro-suicide attitudes which mediate the development of suicidal ideation. Depression is another mediator between parental care and parental control, and suicidal ideation. Fitness indices showed the tested model is better fit than Zhang and Jin’s (1996) model. The results imply suicidal risk assessment that adults’ perceived parental care and control may reveal the level of risk for suicidal ideation. For suicidal prevention, promoting parental care and children autonomy is needed to enhance the protective factors against suicidal ideation. Working with the impaired parents-adults bonding is achieved through facilitating corrective emotional and perceptional experiences.enYoung adults Suicidal behavior.Self-destructive behavior.A model of suicidal ideation for Hong Kong Chinese young adultsThesis
