This illfated marriage not only brings about thedemise of love but also infuriates Di’s mother and Xue’s father, ultimately extinguishing Di Xichen’s of⁃ficial career. By depicting this tale, Xi Zhousheng aims to urge men to be brave and upright, and advocatethat women should become virtuous wives and filial daughters⁃in⁃law. His view of marriage was quite out⁃ dated. However, Xi Zhousheng’s portrayal of women is regressive, depicting shrewish women in a carica⁃tured manner and criticizing their legitimate rights.
