A semi-structured interview was conducted with ten counsellors. The findings from the participants confirmed the limited public understanding. They also indicated the urge to build a distinct professional identity in educating the public; a more active role that needed to be taken by the counsellors in order to promote the registration of counsellors which was crucial to the professional development; and a call for the Counselling Association to take up a more significant role to structuralize the local training, monitor the ongoing training of the counsellors and promote indigenous study of counselling.engCounseling China Hong Kong. The need for professional development of counselling profession in Hong KongThesis
