Their attitude towards the meaning of marriage and legalization of same-sex marriage were discussed in relation to their homosexual identity development in life story through in-depth interviews. Narrative analysis was used to generate distinctive themes from their life stories and point of views concerning marriage. Results showed that married couples regarded marriage as a form of commitment and affirmation to their exclusive intimate relationship. Couples with no intention to get married, in contrast, deemed practicalities, benefits and extra rights brought by the change in marital status as the only function of marriage. The lack of legal recognition in Hong Kong hence accounted for their limited interest in getting married overseas. Mixed opinion was found towards legalization of same-sex, which would provide new insight in the understanding of internalized heterosexism in the local context.engHomosexualGayLesbian Same-Sex MarriageIdentityNarrative AnalysisHuman behavior.Social psychology.Same-sex marriage. The perception of marriage among homosexuals in Hong Kong and its relationship with their identity development : a qualitative studyPerception of marriage among homosexuals in Hong Kong.Thesis
