The 2025 HKCPsych International Mental Health Congress, Hong Kong.http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11861/24171Objectives: This study investigates how school counselling services in the self-financed sector of higher education (SFSHE) accommodate the changing school environment and demographic profiles of students.
Methods: Through purposive sampling by invitations sent to counselling service units, 10 respondents working in local SFSHE institutions were recruited for interviews. Interviewees included counsellors/counselling psychologists working in three local private universities, five other institutes that offer Bachelor’s degree benchmarked programmes, as well as two respondents working in institutes offering Higher Diploma or Associate Degree programmes. Themes generated from Grounded Theory after individual interviews were reported.
Results: Issues including adaptation for Mainland students and students with special educational needs (SEN) in tertiary levels were addressed. Holiday arrangements and emergency contact information were often difficult to provide in selffinanced sectors that outsource counselling services to local non-governmental organisations. As more students with SEN enrolled in SFSHE institutions, new roles for counselling services, such as the provision of in-campus teacher training, led to new demands for counselling professionals.
Conclusion: Enhanced professional recognition of counselling and counselling psychology is identified by respondents as a prerequisite for rapport between counselling personnel and students in SFSHE.enSWOT analysis of in-campus counselling services: Voices from the fieldConference Paper
