Abstract
Since the economic reform, Chinese cities have subjected to unprecedented transformation in terms of physical image, land use pattern, spatial structure, as well as huge change of built-up area in rural-urban fringe. However, scholarly research on the rural-urban fringe tends to fall far behind its real development. The paper sheds light on the changes in the rural-urban fringe and discusses a suitable analytical perspective for its built environment research. Based on the examination of characteristics of rural-urban fringe and limitation of current research on built environment in the context of transitional China, it argues that the concept of space negotiation provides an appropriate focal point for built environment research in rural-urban fringe of Chinese cities.
