Department of Social Work

Mission
Message from the Head of Department

The Department of Social Work was one of the very first academic departments established under the Hong Kong Shue Yan University when the University was founded by Dr. Henry H.L. Hu and Dr. Chung Chi Yung in 1971.

Over the years, the Department of Social Work has evolved from offering a Diploma in Social Work to the now much acclaimed and accredited Bachelor in Social Work (BSW) program in Hong Kong since 2002. Our graduates are now working in different social service sectors, supporting children, youth, families, and the disadvantaged populations in our community, upholding the values and beliefs required of a Registered Social Worker.

The mission of our Department is to contribute to the betterment of our society through education, research and advocacy. Our hope for our graduates is that they will become competent and compassionate leaders in their respective fields, drawing the unique strength of each individual, adopting an open, reflective and critical mindset and partnering with different professionals, trades, stakeholders and sectors of our community to make a better society for all.

Our BSW programme is the only one in Hong Kong which offers three fieldwork placements for our students. The three fieldwork placements allow our students to further consolidate their knowledge and provide them with additional opportunities and exposure in different service areas. The importance of generating new knowledge is also an important feature of the BSW programme. Each student has to design and conduct an honors research study on a social work related issue. The honors project has proven to be a great asset for our students in their future career development.

Hong Kong is undergoing significant changes, politically, socially, financially, and environmentally. These changes have posed tremendous challenges in our children, youth and families. Social workers have to deal with issues and problems which are much more complicated and complex. How we educate our future generations of social workers and prepare them to support our community, especially the disadvantaged, the less articulate and the less fortunate, remains a great challenge for educators.

Together with my colleagues, our Department will continue to do our utmost to ensure that our curriculum is updated, our teaching is relevant and our effort to generate new knowledge is vigorous.
